Hexagram 44 changing to 57: Coming to Meet to The Gentle

Line 4 changes.

Where it starts: 44 Coming to Meet

One yin line entering beneath five yang: an encounter that looks small and must be met with clear judgement. Wind below, heaven above: wind moving under the sky, reaching into everything. One yielding line has entered at the bottom, the reverse of Breakthrough. Coming to Meet describes an encounter with something that seems harmless and is not: an influence, a person, a temptation, a small beginning of a large change. The tradition's judgement is blunt: the maiden is powerful, one should not marry such a maiden. The image is gentler: the prince issues commands and proclaims them to the four quarters. The reading asks for alertness at the point of meeting: what is arriving is small now and will not stay small, and the right response is to see it clearly and to set terms at once.

Where it goes: 57 The Gentle

Wind repeated: gentle, persistent penetration, which reaches where force cannot, provided it has a direction. Wind below, wind above: the gentle doubled, wind following wind. The Gentle describes influence that works by persistence rather than by force: the wind that shapes the rock over years, the idea that spreads by being repeated calmly. The tradition's judgement is modest and clear: success through what is small, it furthers to have somewhere to go, it furthers to see the great person. Gentleness needs a goal or it dissipates; it needs a leader or it wanders. The image is of commands repeated until they are understood. The reading says the situation calls for patient, unhurried, repeated influence, and it warns that gentleness without direction becomes mere yielding.

The lines that move

  1. Line 4

No fish in the tank. This leads to misfortune.

The one who should have contained the influence has let it go, out of contempt or neglect, and lost the connection to those below. Misfortune comes from having failed to meet what should have been met. You have neglected what you should have handled; the loss follows.

What is changing. The situation of Coming to Meet is moving toward The Gentle. See the encounter clearly at the start, set terms at once, and do not bind yourself to what will grow. As the change completes: Influence gently and repeatedly, toward a clear goal, under good guidance.

love and relationships
Now: An encounter, attractive and possibly unwise. The reading does not say refuse it; it says see it for what it is and do not bind yourself to something that will grow beyond your control. Set the terms at the start. Then: Influence by patience: the same gentle thing, said and done again, until it reaches. Not pressure, not silence. The reading favours it and asks for a direction; gentleness that does not know what it wants becomes drifting.
career
Now: A new influence, person or proposal entering, apparently minor. Treat it with full attention; the hexagram's lesson is that what enters small becomes decisive. Judge it now, clearly, and declare where you stand. Then: Persuasion by repetition and calm: the proposal made again, clarified, brought back. The reading supports gentle persistence toward a clear goal, and the guidance of someone senior. Force will not work here; neither will passivity.
money
Now: A tempting opportunity that arrives unexpectedly. Do not commit on the strength of its appeal. The reading warns against being drawn into a coupling whose consequences you cannot yet see. Then: Small, patient, repeated gains rather than a single stroke. Keep the objective clear and keep at it. The reading warns against gentleness so complete it has no aim.
decisions
Now: Recognise the meeting for what it is before you decide. The reading is against binding commitments to an influence that has just appeared and looks small. Set conditions; do not marry the maiden. Then: Choose the option that can be pursued patiently and repeatedly toward a definite end. The reading favours the gradual approach over the decisive one, and it insists on knowing where you are going.
