Hexagram 5 changing to 48: Waiting to The Well

Line 1 changes.

Where it starts: 5 Waiting

Confident waiting: the rain will come, and the strong person eats and drinks in the meantime. Heaven below, water above: clouds gathering, rain not yet falling. Waiting is not helplessness. The lower trigram is strength, and the reading describes strength that knows it cannot force the weather and therefore waits with calm and even enjoyment. The tradition's image is of someone nourishing themselves cheerfully while the situation ripens. Danger is ahead, in the water above, and the way through it is not to rush at it but to arrive at it prepared. The outcome is favourable if you are sincere and steady.

Where it goes: 48 The Well

The well that does not move while the town changes around it: the inexhaustible source, and the care it needs to reach. Wind below, water above: wood reaching down into water, the pole and bucket drawing from the well. The Well is the hexagram of the source: what nourishes everyone, stays where it is, and can be neither increased nor diminished. The tradition's judgement is that the town may be moved but the well cannot, that it neither decreases nor increases, and that if the rope is too short or the jug breaks, there is misfortune. The source is constant; the reaching is the difficulty. The reading says there is something deep and reliable here, in a person, a tradition, a practice, and asks whether you are drawing from it properly, with a clean well, a long enough rope and an unbroken jug.

The lines that move

  1. Line 1

Waiting in the meadow. It is best to stay with what lasts.

The danger is still far off and there is open ground between you and it. Nothing needs to change yet. The right response is to carry on with ordinary, durable routines rather than to start anticipating trouble. Keep to your normal, steady course; the difficulty is not close.

What is changing. The situation of Waiting is moving toward The Well. Wait with confidence and keep yourself strong while the situation ripens. As the change completes: Keep the well clean and the rope long; the source is constant, the access is your work.

love and relationships
Now: Something is coming that cannot be hurried. Pushing for an answer now would spoil it. Enjoy what is present, keep your own life full, and let the other person arrive in their own time. Then: There is a deep source here, in the relationship or in one of you, and the question is whether it is being reached. Clean the well: clear the mud of old grievances. Lengthen the rope: give the time and attention it takes to draw. The source is not the problem.
career
Now: A decision, promotion or result is out of your hands for now. The reading says wait with confidence, keep yourself sharp and fed, and be ready when the moment opens. Agitation gains nothing. Then: Something reliable and nourishing at the centre of the work, or of you. The reading asks you to maintain access to it: keep skills clear, keep the means of drawing on knowledge in good repair, and share the water. A well no one drinks from is the waste the lines describe.
money
Now: Not yet. Funds, returns or the right opportunity are coming but not here. Do not force a move to relieve the discomfort of waiting; the cost of impatience is higher than the cost of delay. Then: A steady source of income or value that does not fluctuate with the news. Maintain it, do not neglect it for something showier, and make sure the means of drawing on it are sound. The jug must not break at the top.
decisions
Now: Delay the decision without anxiety. Gather what you need, stay steady, and decide when the situation has ripened. This is calculated waiting, not avoidance. Then: Choose the option that keeps you connected to a constant source rather than the one that moves the town. Ask whether your rope is long enough and your jug whole before you decide you are at a dry well.
