The meaning of Hexagram 5
Heaven below, water above: clouds gathering, rain not yet falling. Waiting is not helplessness. The lower trigram is strength, and the reading describes strength that knows it cannot force the weather and therefore waits with calm and even enjoyment. The tradition's image is of someone nourishing themselves cheerfully while the situation ripens. Danger is ahead, in the water above, and the way through it is not to rush at it but to arrive at it prepared. The outcome is favourable if you are sincere and steady.

A decision, promotion or result is out of your hands for now. The reading says wait with confidence, keep yourself sharp and fed, and be ready when the moment opens. Agitation gains nothing.

Moving too early has put you in an exposed, stuck position, and it attracts trouble that would otherwise have passed by. The remedy is extreme care: the tradition says damage can still be avoided by seriousness and caution.

Closer to the water now, and people begin to comment or criticise. The line says to let the talk pass; answering it would draw you into the very agitation you are avoiding. Calm holds.
