Hexagram 54 changing to 58: The Marrying Maiden to The Joyous

Line 5 changes.

Where it starts: 54 The Marrying Maiden

Entering a relationship on unequal terms: a position with little standing, held well by tact and by knowing its limits. Lake below, thunder above: the young daughter following the eldest son, joy in the wake of movement. The Marrying Maiden describes a relationship or a role entered from a position of weakness: the secondary partner, the junior, the one who joins an arrangement already formed. The tradition's judgement is unusually stark: undertakings bring misfortune, nothing that furthers. This is not a condemnation of the person. It says that a position with no standing cannot be used to push, and that the way to hold it is with tact, patience and an understanding of what will and will not last. The reading asks you to see the terms of the arrangement clearly before you act within it.

Where it goes: 58 The Joyous

Two lakes joined: joy that is firm within and gentle without, and shared with friends in open conversation. Lake below, lake above: two lakes touching, each replenishing the other. The Joyous is the hexagram of gladness, and its structure explains the tradition's view of it: a firm line within, a yielding line without. True joy is firm inside and gentle outside, not the reverse. The judgement is success, persistence furthers. The image is of friends discussing and practising together, joy that grows by being shared and by being about something. The reading says the situation is one of gladness, or should be, and the lines distinguish the joy that comes from within and from good company from the joy that is sought outside and ends in dissipation.

The lines that move

  1. Line 5

The sovereign gave his daughter in marriage. Her embroidered garments were not as gorgeous as those of her attendant. The moon nearly full brings good fortune.

Someone of high standing entering a lesser position and doing so with modesty, outshone in ornament by their attendants and not minding. The nearly full moon is the perfect degree of fullness. The line is the hexagram's grace. Enter the lesser position modestly; do not compete with ornament.

What is changing. The situation of The Marrying Maiden is moving toward The Joyous. See the terms of the arrangement as they are, hold your position with tact, and understand what will not last. As the change completes: Keep joy firm within and gentle without, and share it in honest company.

love and relationships
Now: A relationship on unequal terms, or one entered without the standing you would want. The reading does not say leave, and it does not say push. It says understand exactly what the position is, hold it with dignity and tact, and do not mistake it for something it is not. Then: Gladness in the relationship, and the reading's counsel on how to keep it: firm inside, gentle outside. Joy that depends on the other person's constant reassurance is the weak kind; joy that is grounded in yourself and shared openly is the lasting kind.
career
Now: A junior or secondary role, joined late, with little leverage. The reading is against initiatives from this position and in favour of doing the role well, with tact, while understanding its limits. The lines describe both the people who thrive in it and those who overreach. Then: Good working relationships, open exchange, the pleasure of learning with others. The reading favours collaboration and honest discussion, and warns against the gladness that comes from flattery or from seeking approval.
money
Now: An arrangement in which you are the weaker party. Do not push for more than the terms allow. Understand the transitory nature of the deal and do not build permanent plans on it. Then: Enjoyment of what you have, shared. The reading is against spending on pleasure sought from outside, and for the contentment that comes from a firm inner position. Beware of the tempting proposal that brings a false gladness.
decisions
Now: The reading warns against undertakings. If you must decide, choose the option that keeps your dignity inside the unequal arrangement, and understand its temporary nature before you commit anything lasting to it. Then: Choose the option that brings real, grounded gladness, and share the deciding with people you trust. The reading is against the choice made to please or to be pleased, and for the one made from inner firmness.
