Hexagram 6 changing to 12: Conflict to Standstill
Line 2 changes.
Where it starts: 6 Conflict
A dispute you are sincere in but cannot win outright: meet halfway, and take advice before going further. Water below, heaven above: the two move in opposite directions and cannot meet. Conflict describes a disagreement that has hardened, where you may be in the right and still cannot carry it through by force. The tradition is specific: sincerity matters, obstruction is real, stopping halfway brings good fortune and pushing to the end brings misfortune. It recommends seeing the great person, meaning someone impartial who can arbitrate, and it says plainly that this is not the time to cross the great water, not the time for large undertakings.
Where it goes: 12 Standstill
Heaven and earth apart: the wrong people are in charge, and the right response is dignified withdrawal. Earth below, heaven above: each moving away from the other, so that nothing connects. Standstill is the mirror of Peace. Communication fails, the petty prosper and the worthy are sidelined, and effort in the ordinary channels comes to nothing. The tradition does not counsel despair; it counsels withdrawal into one's own integrity. The wise person in a time of standstill does not compromise to get on, does not accept honours from the wrong hands, and waits for the turn, which the later lines say is coming.
The lines that move
Unable to win, one goes home and withdraws. The people of the town are spared.
You face a stronger opponent. Withdrawing is not cowardice; it protects the people who depend on you from the fallout of a fight you cannot win. Retreat here is a form of responsibility. Withdraw from the unequal contest and protect those around you.
What is changing. The situation of Conflict is moving toward Standstill. Stop the dispute halfway, seek an impartial view, and start nothing large until it is settled. As the change completes: Withdraw into your own integrity, refuse honours from the wrong hands, and wait for the turn.
- love and relationships
- Now: An argument in which both of you feel right. Winning it is not available. The reading asks you to stop before the point of no return, to bring in a fair outside view if you need one, and to look at how the disagreement began. Then: Communication has stopped and effort is not getting through. Do not force it and do not compromise yourself to restore contact. Hold your own centre, be patient, and let the standstill run its course; it does.
- career
- Now: A conflict with a colleague, client or employer. Do not escalate to the end. Document your position, stay sincere, seek a neutral arbiter, and settle at the halfway point where you can. Then: The wrong people are being rewarded and your work is not reaching anyone. This is not a time to campaign for recognition or to accept a role that costs your integrity. Keep your standards, keep your head down, and wait.
- money
- Now: A dispute over money, or a deal going sour. The reading warns against litigation to the finish and against new ventures while the dispute is open. Settle if you can; do not expand while you fight. Then: Blocked. Ventures started now stall; the environment is not receptive. Conserve, avoid the tempting deal from a dubious source, and wait for conditions to reopen.
- decisions
- Now: Do not decide in the heat of the conflict, and do not commit to anything large while it runs. The choice that lets you stop halfway with dignity is the better one. Then: Not the time for the ambitious choice. If a decision cannot wait, choose the option that preserves your position and your integrity. The tradition says the standstill turns; decide as someone who will be here when it does.
