Hexagram 60 changing to 5: Limitation to Waiting

Line 3 changes.

Where it starts: 60 Limitation

Water in a lake with a bank: limits that give form and save strength, provided they are not galling. Lake below, water above: a lake that holds only so much, and overflows past its limit. Limitation describes measure: the boundaries, rules and economies that give a life or an undertaking its shape. The Chinese character is the joint of a bamboo stalk, the division that makes the whole strong. The tradition's judgement is that limitation brings success, and that galling limitation must not be persisted in. Limits are good when they fit and harmful when they crush. The image is of the wise person creating number and measure and examining the nature of virtue and conduct. The reading says the situation asks for limits, chosen deliberately, and asks you to set them where they strengthen rather than where they strangle.

Where it goes: 5 Waiting

Confident waiting: the rain will come, and the strong person eats and drinks in the meantime. Heaven below, water above: clouds gathering, rain not yet falling. Waiting is not helplessness. The lower trigram is strength, and the reading describes strength that knows it cannot force the weather and therefore waits with calm and even enjoyment. The tradition's image is of someone nourishing themselves cheerfully while the situation ripens. Danger is ahead, in the water above, and the way through it is not to rush at it but to arrive at it prepared. The outcome is favourable if you are sincere and steady.

The lines that move

  1. Line 3

He who knows no limitation will have cause to lament. No blame.

Excess, and the regret that follows it, with the tradition's note that the lament itself clears the blame. Someone who has overdone it and knows it. The lesson is learned from the inside. If you have overdone it, let the regret teach the limit; no further blame.

What is changing. The situation of Limitation is moving toward Waiting. Set limits deliberately, where they give form and save strength, and keep them; loosen any that gall. As the change completes: Wait with confidence and keep yourself strong while the situation ripens.

love and relationships
Now: Boundaries, agreed and kept: what each of you needs, what each of you will not do, how much is enough. The reading favours limits that both of you accept and warns against ones that gall. The right measure makes the relationship strong at the joints. Then: Something is coming that cannot be hurried. Pushing for an answer now would spoil it. Enjoy what is present, keep your own life full, and let the other person arrive in their own time.
career
Now: Discipline and economy: the scope defined, the hours set, the standard fixed. The reading favours clear limits that people can work within, and warns against constraints so tight that they break the people they were meant to shape. Then: A decision, promotion or result is out of your hands for now. The reading says wait with confidence, keep yourself sharp and fed, and be ready when the moment opens. Agitation gains nothing.
money
Now: Budget. The reading is for thrift and measure, limits set deliberately and kept. It warns against both extravagance and a stinginess so severe it becomes its own harm. Find the proportion. Then: Not yet. Funds, returns or the right opportunity are coming but not here. Do not force a move to relieve the discomfort of waiting; the cost of impatience is higher than the cost of delay.
decisions
Now: Choose the option with clear, bearable limits. Decide how much is enough before you decide anything else. The reading is against open-ended commitments and against ones so restrictive they cannot be kept. Then: Delay the decision without anxiety. Gather what you need, stay steady, and decide when the situation has ripened. This is calculated waiting, not avoidance.
