The meaning of Hexagram 8
Earth below, water above: water gathering on the ground, flowing together. Holding Together describes union, the natural drawing-together of people around someone or something worth gathering around. The tradition's judgement carries a note of urgency: those who come late meet misfortune. It also asks the centre of the union to examine itself, to ask the oracle again whether it has the greatness, constancy and perseverance to hold a group. The reading favours joining and belonging, sincerely and without delay.

Pooled resources, partnerships and shared ventures are favoured, provided the centre is trustworthy. Check the person at the middle of the arrangement before you commit.

Decide to join, and decide soon. The reading does not reward the person who waits to see how a union turns out before choosing a side.

Read from the bottom. A changing line flips, and the hexagram it changes into is named with each.
Holding together without a head. Misfortune.
A union with no centre, or a person who missed the moment to join and now has nowhere to belong. The line warns of what comes of delay: the group forms without you. The remedy, where it is still possible, is to find the centre now.

The line of the generous centre: someone who attracts a following without coercion and lets those who do not wish to join go freely. Union of this kind is the strongest because no one is trapped in it.

Open, declared loyalty to a worthy leader or partner. Nothing hidden, nothing double. The line approves of visible allegiance when its object deserves it.

Holding together with the wrong people.
You are in company that is not right for you, and the tradition does not pretend otherwise. The line does not order you to leave; it asks you to see clearly that intimacy here is misplaced and to keep a proper reserve.

Holding together from within. Persistence brings good fortune.
A genuine bond, chosen freely and from the inside. The line warns against throwing yourself at those above in the hope of favour; the loyalty that holds is the one you give because you mean it.

Hold together sincerely; no blame. Sincerity like a full bowl draws good fortune from elsewhere.
Union begins with inner truthfulness rather than outward show. Bring sincerity to the relationship and unexpected good comes of it. The full bowl is plain, unadorned, and enough.
