Annual profections: your year's ruling planet
One house per year of life, cycling every twelve — and you can work it out on your fingers.

The short answer
Annual profections advance one house per year of life from your Ascendant. At age 0 you are in the 1st house, at 1 the 2nd, and so on, returning to the 1st at 12, 24, 36 and 48. The ruler of the sign on that house becomes your year's ruling planet, and its condition and transits are read as setting the year's theme. It is entirely arithmetic and needs no software.
How to work out yours
Thirty seconds, no software
- Take your age at your last birthday.
- Divide by 12 and keep the remainder. Age 29 gives a remainder of 5.
- Add 1. That is your profected house — remainder 5 gives the 6th house.
- Find the sign on that house. In whole-sign houses, count that many signs from your rising sign.
- The ruler of that sign is your year's ruler. Its natal condition, and what is transiting it, are read as the year's theme.
Because the cycle is twelve years, ages 12, 24, 36, 48 and 60 all return to the 1st house — profected years focused on the self, ruled by your chart ruler. Ages 0, 12, 24 and so on sharing a theme is one of the technique's more striking claims.
Why practitioners like it
It narrows the chart. A natal chart has ten planets and dozens of aspects, and the perennial difficulty is knowing what to look at. Profections nominate one planet for the year and tell you to watch it.
That is a genuine methodological virtue regardless of whether the technique works: a rule that reduces what you attend to, decided in advance, is far harder to bend than an open-ended search for whatever fits.
It also combines with transits. A transit to your year's ruler is read as considerably more significant than the same transit in an ordinary year, which turns an undifferentiated stream of transits into a prioritised one.

The honest caveat
Twelve categories cycling on a fixed schedule means everyone your age has the same profected house. The ruling planet differs by rising sign, which adds twelve more variations — so there are 144 combinations, shared by a substantial slice of the population.
There is also no evidence for it. It is old, mechanically simple, and unvalidated, which is the accurate description of most traditional technique.
It needs a birth time, since it counts from the Ascendant. AsterNym does not compute profections, but the arithmetic above works from the rising sign shown on your natal chart.
