Astrology in Islam: scholarship, history and the ruling
A tradition that advanced the astronomy while its scholars ruled against the divination.

The short answer
The mainstream position across Sunni and Shia scholarship is that predictive astrology — claiming to know the future or a person's fate from the stars — is prohibited, on the basis that knowledge of the unseen belongs to God alone and hadith explicitly warning against believing fortune-tellers. Astronomy is treated entirely differently and is encouraged, since it serves prayer times, the qibla and the calendar. The distinction that governs everything
Classical Islamic scholarship separates two things that English often blurs into one word.
'Ilm al-falak — astronomy. The study of celestial motion. This is not merely permitted but has an established religious utility: determining prayer times, finding the direction of the qibla, and fixing the lunar calendar including Ramadan. The Qur'an refers to the stars as a means of navigation and as signs of creation.
'Ilm al-ahkam al-nujum — judicial or predictive astrology. Claiming to derive knowledge of events, fates and outcomes from celestial positions. It is this second category that the prohibition addresses.
Almost every confusion about Islam and astrology comes from collapsing these two.
The basis of the prohibition
The scriptural reasoning most commonly cited runs along two lines.
First, knowledge of the unseen (al-ghayb) belongs to God alone. Several Qur'anic verses state this directly. A claim to know what will happen is therefore understood as a claim to something reserved to God, which touches on tawhid — the oneness of God — and makes this a matter of creed rather than merely of conduct.
Second, hadith address fortune-telling explicitly. Narrations warn that one who goes to a fortune-teller and believes what is said has stepped outside the acceptance of what was revealed, and there are reports specifically criticising the practice of reading fates from the stars.
The consequence is that scholarly discussion generally treats predictive astrology not as a minor discouraged act but as a serious matter, with the gravity depending on whether the person believes the stars themselves cause events or merely indicate them.
The history is genuinely complicated
It would be wrong to leave the impression that astrology was simply absent from Islamic civilisation. During the Abbasid period and after, astrology was practised at courts, and some of the most important astrological texts in the whole Western tradition were written by scholars in the Islamic world.
Abu Ma'shar al-Balkhi, in the ninth century, produced work that shaped European astrology for centuries after its translation into Latin. Al-Kindi wrote on astrological theory. Much of the technical vocabulary of Western astrology arrived in Europe through Arabic transmission — which is why English has 'zenith', 'nadir' and 'almanac', and why so many stars carry Arabic names: Aldebaran, Altair, Deneb, Rigel, Betelgeuse.
At the same time, some of the sharpest criticism of astrology in the pre-modern world came from within the same tradition. Al-Biruni, in the eleventh century, wrote a comprehensive account of astrological technique while making clear his reservations about its validity, and drew a firm line between the mathematical astronomy he trusted and the predictive claims he did not. Ibn Sina and Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya also argued against astrology's predictive claims.
So the accurate picture is a civilisation that advanced the astronomy enormously, transmitted the astrology to Europe, and produced serious scholarly opposition to the astrology throughout.
What about star names and the lunar mansions?
Pre-Islamic Arabia had a well-developed system of anwa' — lunar mansions used to track the seasons and, in some usage, to attribute rainfall to particular stars. Hadith criticising the attribution of rain to stars address exactly this: the objection is to assigning causal power to a star rather than to God, not to the observational tracking of seasons.
