Zodiac clashes and the ben ming nian year

Your own year is the difficult one

This surprises most people meeting it for the first time. Intuition says your own animal's year should favour you. Tradition says the opposite, and my grandmother said it louder.

The explanation usually given involves Tai Sui (太歲), the Grand Duke or deity of the year. Sharing the year's branch is held to bring you into direct contact with Tai Sui, and direct contact with a powerful authority is not something the almanacs treat as comfortable.

In practice ben ming nian counts, for almanac writers, as a year of instability, change and extra caution: a year to avoid unnecessary risk and major commitments, rather than a disaster. Wear the red if you like it. I do not think Tai Sui has ever noticed a belt.

The red rule

The customary protection is red: the colour associated with warding off misfortune across Chinese tradition.

The specific practice is red underwear, worn throughout the year, though red belts, socks and cords are also common. Red string bracelets and jade pendants appear too.

The condition that gets omitted from most Western summaries: it should be given to you by someone else, traditionally a family member or partner, instead of bought for yourself. The protection is held to come partly from the giving.

It is a widespread practice. Retailers in China and across the diaspora stock red underwear heavily ahead of a new year, and the demand is entirely real regardless of what one makes of the belief.

Wear the red if you like it. I don't think Tai Sui has ever noticed a belt.

The six clashes

What to make of it

As culture, it's interesting: a widespread, actively practised custom with a specific rule about gifting that most summaries miss.

As prediction, the arithmetic is the same problem as every other year-based claim. One person in twelve has a ben ming nian in any given year, and one in twelve has a clash year, so at any moment roughly a sixth of the population is in a year tradition considers unsettled. A category covering that many people isn't identifying anything about your situation.

There is also a self-fulfilment issue to name. Someone who believes this is a difficult year may defer decisions, avoid opportunities and interpret ordinary setbacks as confirmation. The belief can produce the caution it recommends, and the caution can produce the year.

The version to keep

If a ben ming nian prompts you to take stock at a twelve-year interval, that is a reasonable rhythm and the belief has done something helpful. Twelve years is a decent gap for asking whether you're still doing the right things.
