Compatibility triangles: the four trines explained
Four groups of three, spaced evenly round the circle — and a compatibility claim with a geometric basis.

The short answer
The twelve animals divide into four trines of three, each spaced four positions apart: Rat, Dragon and Monkey; Ox, Snake and Rooster; Tiger, Horse and Dog; Rabbit, Goat and Pig. Animals within a trine are said to share temperament and get on naturally. The grouping is geometric — four apart on a twelve-position circle — and in BaZi the same three branches combine into a single element when all are present.
The four trines

Take the twelve animals in order and count every fourth one, and you generate these groups exactly. Rat is 1, Dragon is 5, Monkey is 9. Ox is 2, Snake is 6, Rooster is 10. The structure is arithmetic, not observation.
The geometry
Twelve positions on a circle, three points spaced four apart, gives an equilateral triangle. That is where the name comes from, and it is the same geometry as the trine aspect in Western astrology — 120 degrees, also read as harmonious.
Both systems reached the same conclusion from the same structure: points spaced evenly at a third of a circle are read as compatible. Whether that reflects something real or simply reflects that a third of a circle is aesthetically satisfying is a question neither tradition answers.
In BaZi the trine has a specific technical function: when all three branches of a group appear in a chart, they are held to combine into the group's element, which can significantly shift the chart's elemental balance.
The opposite claim: clashes
The counterpart to the trine is the clash — animals sitting directly opposite, six positions apart. Rat clashes Horse, Ox clashes Goat, Tiger clashes Monkey, Rabbit clashes Rooster, Dragon clashes Dog, Snake clashes Pig.
These are traditionally read as friction rather than compatibility, and they are the basis of ben ming nian, the year that clashes your own sign.
Notice the symmetry with Western astrology again: opposites clash, trines harmonise, in both systems. The geometry drives the interpretation in each case.
What the compatibility claim is actually worth
Not much, and it is worth being direct about why.
Your birth year is a single fact shared by roughly a twelfth of everyone alive. Any compatibility system based on it is sorting eight billion people into twelve bins and predicting relationships from which bins two people fall into. Nothing about you as an individual enters the calculation.
There is also a structural giveaway: because animals in a trine are four years apart, trine-compatible partners tend to be four, eight or twelve years apart in age. A system that produces this pattern is telling you about arithmetic rather than about attraction.
