Expression, Soul Urge and Personality numbers
Three numbers from your name — and the reason they are shakier than your Life Path.

The short answer
All three come from the letters of your full birth name, converted to numbers. Expression uses every letter and is read as natural abilities. Soul Urge uses only the vowels and is read as private motivation. Personality uses only the consonants and is read as the impression you make. Because they depend on spelling, alphabet and which version of your name you use, they are considerably less stable than the date-derived Life Path.

This is the Pythagorean mapping, which is what most English-language numerology uses. A competing scheme, Chaldean, assigns different values and only runs 1 to 8 — see Pythagorean vs Chaldean. The two give different answers for the same name.
The three numbers
- Expression (also called Destiny) — add the values of every letter in your full birth name and reduce. Read as natural abilities and what you are equipped to do.
- Soul Urge (also called Heart's Desire) — add only the vowels and reduce. Read as private motivation: what you actually want, underneath presentation.
- Personality — add only the consonants and reduce. Read as the impression you make before anyone knows you.
Expression equals Soul Urge plus Personality before reduction, which is a neat property of the system and a useful check on your arithmetic. The vowels and consonants together are all the letters.
Which name do you use?
The traditional answer is your full name as recorded at birth — including middle names, including a surname you no longer use. The reasoning is that the birth name is the one given at the moment the chart begins.
That produces immediate complications. Which name applies if you were adopted and renamed as an infant? If your birth certificate spells a name differently from every other document? If your name was transliterated from another script, where the spelling is somebody's choice about how to represent a sound?
Practitioners have answers, and they differ. Some read the birth name for potential and the current name for present expression. Others use whichever name you actually respond to. There is no settled position.
The problem this creates
A system in which changing your surname changes your character is making a claim most people would reject if it were stated that plainly. Yet that is what name numerology asserts — and it is why the name-change question gets its own post.
There is a second issue that gets less attention: the letter-to-number mapping is built around the 26-letter Latin alphabet. A name written in Cyrillic, Arabic, Chinese or Devanagari has no natural numeric value under this scheme, so it must be transliterated first — meaning the number depends on a romanisation somebody chose. For most of the world's population, name numerology runs on a translation rather than a name.
None of this makes the exercise worthless as reflection. It does mean the name numbers deserve less weight than the date-derived Life Path, and anyone treating them as equally solid has not thought about where they come from.
Reading them together
The interesting readings come from mismatches. A Personality of 8 with a Soul Urge of 2 describes someone who reads as authoritative and wants connection — a gap between how you land and what you are after.
