Life Path number: how to calculate and read yours
One number from your birth date, and the only numerology figure most people ever learn.

The short answer
Add every digit of your birth date and reduce until you reach a single digit, except that totals of 11, 22 and 33 are traditionally left unreduced as master numbers. For 14 March 1998: day 1+4=5, month 3, year 1+9+9+8=27→9, then 5+3+9=17→8. The correct method reduces month, day and year separately before adding — reducing the whole date at once can give a different answer, which is why calculators disagree.
The calculation, done correctly
Reduce the month, the day and the year separately, then add those three results and reduce once more. This is the method most practitioners regard as correct, and it matters because the alternative can produce a different number.
Worked example for 14 March 1998:
- Month: March is 3. Already a single digit.
- Day: 14 → 1 + 4 = 5.
- Year: 1998 → 1 + 9 + 9 + 8 = 27 → 2 + 7 = 9.
- Add: 3 + 5 + 9 = 17 → 1 + 7 = 8.
Stop reducing if any stage lands on 11, 22 or 33. Those are master numbers and are traditionally kept — see master numbers.

Notice that every path has a stated difficulty. Numerology descriptions that only list strengths are marketing rather than tradition — the shadow is part of the classical reading of each number.
What the Life Path claims to be
In the tradition it is described as the overall arc: the terrain you are working with rather than a set of events. It is the number to know if you only ever learn one.
It is also the only major numerology figure derived purely from your birth date. The other three core numbers — Expression, Soul Urge and Personality — come from the letters of your name, which makes them dependent on spelling, alphabet and which name you use.
That difference is worth holding onto. A date is a fact about the world; a name is a decision somebody made.
The honest assessment
The arithmetic is exact and anyone can check it, which puts numerology ahead of much divination on transparency. What has never been shown is that the resulting number describes a person.
There is also a structural point worth making: there are nine paths plus three master numbers, so roughly one in nine people shares yours. Any description that fits a ninth of humanity is doing something other than identifying you — the same arithmetic problem as Vedic yogas and Sun signs.

- How do I calculate my Life Path number?

- Why do calculators give different Life Path numbers?
- Because some reduce the whole date as a single string of digits rather than reducing month, day and year separately. The methods usually agree but not always. A good calculator states which convention it uses.
- What is the rarest Life Path number?
- The master numbers 11, 22 and 33 are far less common than the single digits, with 33 rarest of all — some schools do not recognise it as a Life Path at all. Among single digits the distribution is relatively even, at roughly one in nine.
- Does my Life Path number change?
- No. It derives entirely from your birth date, which does not change. Name-based numbers such as Expression and Soul Urge do change if you change your name, which is one of the recognised weaknesses of the name-based side of numerology.
