Month: March is 3. Already a single digit.
Day: 14 → 14 → 5.
Year: 1998 → 1998 → 27 → 9.
Add: 3 + 5 + 9 = 17 → 8 → Life Path 8.

Notice that every path has a stated difficulty. Numerology descriptions that only list strengths are marketing instead of tradition. The shadow is part of the classical reading of each number.

What the Life Path claims to be

In numerologists it's described as the overall arc: the terrain you're working with instead of a set of events. It's the number to know if you only ever learn one.

It is also the only major numerology figure derived purely from your birth date. The other three core numbers, Expression, Soul Urge and Personality: come from the letters of your name, which makes them dependent on spelling, alphabet and which name you use.

That difference needs holding onto. A date is a fact about the world; a name is a decision somebody made.

What a Life Path can and can't do

The arithmetic is exact and anyone can check it, which puts numerology ahead of much divination on transparency. What has never been shown is that the resulting number describes a person.

There is also a structural point that needs making: there are nine paths plus three master numbers, so close to one in nine people shares yours. The split is not even, because calendar dates do not produce every result equally often; the share for each path, computed across every date from 1900 to 2099, is printed on the numerology page.
