What the Lo Shu square is
A 3×3 arrangement of the numbers 1 to 9 in which every row, every column and both diagonals sum to 15. It is the oldest known magic square, attested in Chinese sources well over two thousand years old, and the legend attaches it to a pattern seen on the shell of a turtle emerging from the river Luo.
It is not a curiosity in Chinese metaphysics — it is load-bearing. The square underlies Flying Star feng shui, the Eight Mansions directions, and the elemental assignment of every digit from 1 to 9. When a feng shui consultant talks about the wealth star 8 or the illness star 2, this grid is what they are referring to.
The practice of filling it with someone's birth date, and reading the missing numbers, is far more recent and comes largely from Indian numerology rather than Chinese practice. The two are frequently presented as one tradition. They are not, and the “arrows” are the most recent layer of all.

- The Lo Shu 1 palace is Water in the north, read for career, flow and independent movement. Numerology reads 1 the same way — the originator, the one that goes first.
- 2PartnershipEarth · Southwest
- Earth in the southwest, the relationship palace. Read for cooperation and receptivity. In Flying Star terms 2 is also the illness star, which is why some practitioners avoid it on a front door.
- 3Growth and expressionWood · East
- Wood in the east, the family palace. Read for creativity, communication and things that grow. The most sociable digit in both systems.
- 4Wealth accumulationWood · Southeast
- Wood in the southeast, the wealth palace — which sits awkwardly against the fact that 四 sounds like 死, death, in Chinese. Feng Shui likes 4; Chinese superstition does not. Both readings are genuine and they contradict.
- 5The centreEarth · Centre
- Earth at the centre of the grid, belonging to no direction. Read as change, freedom and instability. In Flying Star 5 is the most disruptive star of all — the one practitioners actively work around.
- 6Authority and helpMetal · Northwest
- Metal in the northwest, the helpful-people palace. Read for mentors, authority and support arriving from outside. 六 also sounds like 流, smooth flow — a favoured number in Chinese practice.
- 7InsightMetal · West
- Metal in the west, the descendants palace. Read for analysis, solitude and specialist skill. Lucky in western culture, neutral to slightly difficult in Chinese practice.
- 8WealthEarth · Northeast
- Earth in the northeast, the knowledge palace, and the wealth star of the current Flying Star period. 八 sounds like 發, to prosper — this is the number people pay real money for on a plate or a phone.
- 9RecognitionFire · South
- Fire in the south, the fame palace. Read for visibility, completion and reputation. 九 sounds like 久, lasting — a strongly favoured number.
