The 12 houses of astrology, explained in order

Houses are not signs

Signs are twelve 30-degree divisions of the zodiac measured from the spring equinox. They are the same for everyone on Earth at a given moment and they describe *how*: the style, tone and quality of a placement.

Houses are twelve divisions measured from *your* eastern horizon at *your* birth minute. They're personal, they complete a full rotation every 24 hours, and they describe *where*, which department of life the placement operates in.

There is a loose modern convention pairing the first house with Aries, the second with Taurus and so on. It's a teaching aid, not a rule, and taking it literally produces the common beginner error of reading a house as though it were its associated sign.

I don't buy the 'empty house means nothing happens there' reading. Everyone has empty houses, and everyone has a life in all twelve areas.

The twelve, in order

The Latin names need seeing because they show how much the readings have softened. The eighth was death, the twelfth was prison, and the modern renderings (transformation, the unconscious) are gentler than what the tradition originally meant.

The structural patterns

Houses are not a flat list, and the patterns are more helpful than memorising twelve definitions.

Personal and interpersonal. Houses one to six concern your own life; seven to twelve involve other people and things beyond your control. The seventh house, partnership, is the hinge: the first house that requires somebody else.

Angular, succedent, cadent. The 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th sit on the chart's angles and are traditionally the strongest; the 2nd, 5th, 8th and 11th follow and are stabilising; the 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th are cadent and were read as weakest. This is set out in full in angular, succedent and cadent.

Opposite pairs. Each house is across from its complement: 1st self and 7th other, 2nd my resources and 8th shared resources, 4th private life and 10th public life, 6th daily work and 12th withdrawal. Reading them as pairs makes them far easier to hold than reading twelve separate categories.

Empty houses

Most charts have empty houses, and this worries beginners more than anything else in a first reading. There are ten or so bodies and twelve houses, so at least two must be empty, and a typical chart has five or six.

An empty house doesn't mean an absent life area. Someone with an empty seventh house isn't destined to be alone, and an empty second isn't a prediction of poverty. Most modern astrologers read an empty house through the sign on its cusp and the position of that sign's ruling planet, which is where the actual information is.

The practical version: a house crowded with planets marks an area of life that's unusually busy or emphasised, for good or ill. An empty house is simply an area that runs without that particular emphasis, which for many people is a mercy.

Counting from another house

The houses can be turned. If the seventh is your partner, then your partner's money is the second house from the seventh, which is your eighth, and that is one reason the eighth came to mean shared resources. Your partner's career is the tenth from the seventh, your fourth. Your children are the fifth, so your grandchildren are the fifth from the fifth, the ninth. Your siblings are the third, so your sibling's partner is the seventh from the third, the ninth again.

This technique, called derived houses or turning the chart, is how traditional astrology answered questions about people other than the person whose chart it was, and it is the engine of horary practice. It also shows how the meanings were built: not from observation of what happens in each house, but from arithmetic on a starting set. The eighth house's connection to inheritance is the second from the seventh, a partner's assets, and the fourth's 'end of matters' is the house opposite the tenth, where things reach the top.

The twelfth house, specifically

The twelfth is the house beginners fear and the one most changed by modern practice. Its Latin name was carcer, prison, and its traditional contents were confinement, hospitals, hidden enemies, secret sorrows, exile and self-undoing. The reason is positional: the twelfth is the house just above the eastern horizon, where a planet has risen but is not yet visible in daylight, and the old astrologers read that as hidden and weakened.

Modern astrology reads the same house as the unconscious, solitude, retreat, dreams, compassion and the work done without an audience. A planet there is now described as private, not imprisoned. Both readings come from the same geometry, and the choice between them is a choice about what to tell a client. A twelfth-house Sun in a chart on this site is described as a life with a strong private side, with the older meaning noted, because the client deserves to know the house had one.

The Vedic grouping

Jyotisha keeps the same twelve houses, the bhavas, and adds a structure the West lost. The houses are grouped in four triangles by aim of life: the dharma houses, first, fifth and ninth, for purpose and fortune; the artha houses, second, sixth and tenth, for resources and work; the kama houses, third, seventh and eleventh, for desire and relationship; and the moksha houses, fourth, eighth and twelfth, for release and the inner life.

The moksha triangle is the interesting one, because it groups home, death and solitude as the houses of letting go, which makes the eighth and twelfth look less like bad news and more like a category. Each house also has a karaka, a planet that signifies its affairs regardless of what sits there: the Sun for the father and the tenth, the Moon for the mother and the fourth, Jupiter for children and the fifth, Venus for the seventh. Which house holds which question

The table is traditional, and its logic deserves seeing for one reason: the assignments are conventions that were argued over, not discoveries. The mother's house is still disputed after two thousand years, which tells you how the others were settled.

Reading a house placement

Three pieces of information combine, and keeping them in order stops the interpretations blurring together.

The house gives the area of life. The sign on it gives the manner. The planet in it gives what is acting there. Mars in Capricorn in the tenth house reads as drive, expressed with discipline, in the arena of career. Change the planet and the driver changes; change the sign and only the style does.

Then check the ruler. The planet ruling the sign on the house cusp brings that house's affairs wherever it sits, which is how a house with nothing in it still gets read. This is also the mechanism behind annual profections, where one house is activated per year.
