Before the detail
Your tarot birth card is the Major Arcana card your birth date reduces to. Add your birth month, day and year together as whole numbers, then keep summing the digits of the result while it is greater than 22; the number you stop on, from 1 to 22, names your card, with 22 belonging to The Fool. The method comes from modern tarot numerology, popularised by writers including Mary K. Greer, and it is read as a lens on character — a card you carry, not a fortune told.
What a birth card is, and where the idea comes from
A birth card is tarot's answer to a birthday: one card of the Major Arcana, fixed by your birth date, read as the deck's standing comment on your character. It is a modern practice, not an ancient one — tarot numerology of this kind was worked out and popularised in the last few decades by writers including Mary K. Greer and the teachers of the Tarot School, and different books shade the details differently.
Only the 22 Major Arcana take part. The Minor Arcana — the four suits with their pips and court cards — never appear as birth cards, because the arithmetic below can only land on 1 through 22. If you want the whole deck's structure first, our piece on the Major and Minor Arcana draws that map.
A birth card is not a daily draw. A reading answers the question in front of you today; a birth card stays put for life, the way a key signature sits under a piece of music. The two uses of the deck are different instruments, and the tradition keeps them apart.
The arithmetic: month + day + year
The standard method adds the three parts of your birth date as whole numbers — not digit by digit. Take the month number, add the day, add the full four-digit year. Then, while the total is greater than 22, replace it with the sum of its digits. The first result that is 22 or less is your birth-card value.
Three worked examples, straight from the calculator's own arithmetic:
- 15 March 1990 — 3 + 15 + 1990 = 2008 → 2 + 0 + 0 + 8 = 10, Wheel of Fortune.
- 2 April 1975 — 4 + 2 + 1975 = 1981 → 1 + 9 + 8 + 1 = 19, The Sun.
- 13 September 1971 — 9 + 13 + 1971 = 1993 → 1 + 9 + 9 + 3 = 22, The Fool.
Notice the stop rule: you stop at the first value of 22 or less, you do not reduce all the way to a single digit. That is what lets every Major Arcana from The Magician to The Fool be somebody's card. And 22 is The Fool because the Fool carries the deck number 0: as a birth-card value it takes the place after The World's 21.
One warning from someone who has checked a lot of these by hand: the sums are easy to slip. A digit missed in the year, and you are confidently the wrong card. The AsterNym tarot calculator runs the exact method above and shows you every step of the working, so you can see your own chain rather than take our word for it.
The 22 birth cards
Each value from 1 to 22 names one card. The short readings here are the ones the AsterNym deck carries; any fuller tarot book will give each card pages, not a line.

|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Magician | Making things real: willpower, skill, resourcefulness |
| 2 | The High Priestess | The inner knowing: intuition, mystery, patience |
| 3 | The Empress | Abundant creation: nurture, beauty, growth |
| 4 | The Emperor | The architect: structure, protection, leadership |
| 5 | The Hierophant | The keeper of wisdom: tradition, teaching, belonging |
| 6 | The Lovers | The meaningful choice: union, values, alignment |
| 7 | The Chariot | Directed will: momentum, focus, victory through effort |
| 8 | Strength | Gentle power: courage, compassion, self-mastery |
| 9 | The Hermit | The inner lantern: reflection, wisdom, solitude |
| 10 | Wheel of Fortune | The turning point: cycles, luck, destiny in motion |
| 11 | Justice | The clear eye: fairness, truth, cause and effect |
| 12 | The Hanged Man | The new angle: surrender, perspective, pause |
| 13 | Death | Transformation: endings that make room for beginnings |
| 14 | Temperance | The alchemist: balance, blending, healing |
| 15 | The Devil | The shadow dance: desire, attachment, reclaiming power |
| 16 | The Tower | The sudden truth: upheaval that clears the ground |
| 17 | The Star | Quiet hope: renewal, inspiration, being seen |
| 18 | The Moon | The dream logic: imagination, instinct, the unseen |
| 19 | The Sun | Radiant joy: vitality, clarity, success |

| 22 | The Fool | The leap of faith: beginnings, spontaneity, trust in the path |
AsterNym uses Rider–Waite–Smith numbering, with Strength at 8 and Justice at 11. Marseille and Thoth decks commonly swap those positions — Justice or Adjustment at 8, Strength or Lust at 11. A deck that does so is not wrong; it follows a different convention, and your birth-card value stays the same either way.
Personality, Soul, and the one three-card chain
Greer's fuller system reads a small constellation, not one card. The first result of the arithmetic is your Personality Card, the face you lead with. Reduce that number once more to a single digit and you have your Soul Card, the quieter current underneath: a Personality of 10, Wheel of Fortune, carries a Soul of 1, The Magician. If your first result is already a single digit, the two are one and the same card wears both hats.
One value is special. A Personality of 19, The Sun, reduces to 10 and then again to 1 — the only chain with three cards in it, Sun, Wheel of Fortune and Magician together. It is also the only route to The Magician as a linked card, which is the kind of structural quirk tarot people enjoy arguing about over tea.
The AsterNym calculator keeps this simple: it shows one primary card, your Personality Card, and lists the linked chain beneath it, so you get the single answer and the fuller picture at once.
What a birth card is read for
The reading is character, held loosely. A Wheel of Fortune person is read as living close to life's turnings; a Hermit person as someone whose compass points inward. The card gives the reading its grain — a tendency to grow into and argue with, not a verdict handed down at birth.
In practice I treat a birth card the way I treat a well-worn nickname: it catches something true, it leaves most of a person out, and it gets more interesting the longer you sit with it.
What it is not is prediction. Nothing in the arithmetic knows your future; the card is a mirror the tradition holds up, and what you see in it depends on the looking. That is the same honest footing we give every system on this site.
Not your Life Path number
If you know numerology you will have noticed the family resemblance: the Life Path number also starts from the birth date and also reduces. The two are cousins, not twins. The Life Path method keeps the master numbers 11, 22 and 33 standing at intermediate stages; the tarot method does not, it only stops once the running total is 22 or less.
So the two can disagree, and a birth card of The Fool — value 22 — does not by itself mean a Life Path of 22. On AsterNym the two are computed separately, each by its own tradition's rules, and your identity on the site is read from the Life Path, never from the tarot number.
The follow-ups
- What is a tarot birth card?
- A tarot birth card is the Major Arcana card a birth date reduces to in modern tarot numerology. Month, day and year are added as whole numbers, then the digits of the total are summed repeatedly while it is greater than 22; the final value from 1 to 22 names the card, with 22 belonging to The Fool.
- How do I calculate my tarot birth card?
- Add your birth month, day and full year as whole numbers. While the total is greater than 22, replace it with the sum of its digits. Stop at the first value of 22 or less: that number is your card. For example, 15 March 1990 gives 3 + 15 + 1990 = 2008, then 2 + 0 + 0 + 8 = 10, Wheel of Fortune.
- Can my birth card be The Fool?
- Yes. The Fool carries the deck number 0 but takes the birth-card value 22, so any date whose total settles on exactly 22 has The Fool as its birth card. A date adding to 1993, for instance, digit-sums to 22 and stops there.
- What is the difference between a Personality Card and a Soul Card?
- The Personality Card is the first result of the reduction, the face you lead with. Reducing that number to a single digit gives the Soul Card, the current underneath. When the first result is already a single digit, one card plays both roles. Only a Personality of 19 yields three cards: 19, 10 and 1.
- Is my tarot birth card the same as my Life Path number?
- No. Both start from the birth date, but the Life Path method keeps the master numbers 11, 22 and 33 at intermediate stages while the tarot method reduces until the total is 22 or less. The two can land on different numbers, and a birth card of The Fool does not imply a Life Path of 22.
