Two numbers, one date, and a distinction most calculators blur.

The short answer
Your Life Path uses your entire birth date — month, day and year — and is read as your overall arc. Your birthday number uses only the day of the month, and is read as a specific talent or approach you bring. Someone born on 23 March 1990 has a birthday number of 23 (or 5 reduced) and a Life Path derived from all three components. They are different numbers doing different jobs, and the birthday number is much the lesser of the two.

That last row is the one people find surprising. The birthday number is more discriminating than the Life Path — thirty-one possible values rather than twelve — and yet it is treated as the minor figure. Specificity and importance are not the same thing in this system.
How the birthday number is read
Most practitioners read the unreduced day as well as its reduced form, on the basis that 23 and 5 carry different flavours even though 2+3 = 5.
So someone born on the 23rd is read as a 23/5, someone born on the 5th as a plain 5, and someone born on the 14th as a 14/5. All three reduce identically and are described differently — the tradition treats the route to the number as informative.
Days totalling 11 and 22 — the 11th, the 22nd, and sometimes the 29th, which reduces to 11 — are treated as master numbers here as elsewhere.
The other date-derived numbers
- Life Path — the whole date. The primary number. See Life Path.
- Birthday number — the day alone.
- Personal year — birth month and day plus the current year, cycling 1 to 9. See personal year cycles.
- Attitude number — birth month plus day, read as how you come across on first contact. Less commonly used and inconsistently defined.
- Pinnacles and challenges — four long life periods derived from the same components, calculated differently by different schools.
All of these come from one date, which is worth noticing. A single birth date generates six or more numbers depending on which practitioner you ask, and with enough derived figures something in the set will fit anyone.
Why the distinction matters
Chiefly because people conflate them and then report the wrong number. Someone born on the 8th who says 'I'm an 8' may mean their birthday number while their Life Path is a 3, and every description they read will be about the wrong figure.
If you have only ever seen one number attached to your date, check which it is. The quickest test: if it came from the day of the month alone, it is your birthday number, not your Life Path.
