Zodiac signs as sandwiches
Entirely for fun. There is one genuinely interesting thing about why lists like this work at all.

The short answer
This is the least serious post on the site and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Fire signs get something hot and assertive, earth signs something substantial, air signs something light with a lot of components, and water signs something soft and comforting. The genuinely interesting question is why a list this arbitrary still feels like it fits, and that has a documented answer.

Why an arbitrary list still fits
This is the part worth reading, and it applies to every list of this kind including the ones we have written.
The [Barnum effect](/blog/the-barnum-effect) is the main mechanism: descriptions written to be broadly applicable are experienced as specifically true. Twelve short character sketches will each fit a large share of people.
Confirmation bias does the rest. You read your own row, find something that fits, and stop. The eleven others that would also have fitted are never tested.
And there is a third thing specific to these lists: they are constructed from element and modality, which are genuinely coherent categories describing four qualities and three behaviours. Twelve combinations of two real distinctions will produce twelve distinguishable characterisations regardless of what they are attached to.
The test, one more time
Read a row for a sign that is not yours without checking which it is. If it also fits, the recognition is not coming from astrology.
This is the same suggestion made in how accurate is Western astrology, sun sign stereotypes and several other posts here, and it is repeated because it is the single cheapest honesty check available and almost nobody performs it.
It costs ten seconds. If a sandwich list survives it, that is genuinely interesting. It will not.
Is it fine to enjoy this?
Yes, obviously. Nobody is harmed by a sandwich list and there is no reason to be sour about content that exists to be enjoyed.
The position this journal holds is narrower than 'astrology is bad'. It is that claims should be labelled — that a page making a factual claim should be checkable, and a page making no claim should say so.
