What changed in 2023
Discord used to hang a four-digit discriminator off every username, so a hundred thousand people could all be Ana and the #4417 told them apart. That went in 2023. Usernames became globally unique, lowercase and unshared, and the short ones were claimed within days of the migration opening.
So a username here is closer to a domain than to a nickname: one holder, first come, and no numeric suffix to fall back on. The display name absorbed everything the old system let you be casual about, and it is the field that still takes capitals, spaces and emoji.
There is a third layer most platforms do not have: a per-server nickname, set separately in every server you join. So the same account can carry one global username, one global display name, and a different name again in each place it turns up. Only the first of those is scarce.

Username and display name are two different problems
Since 2023 your Discord username is unique, lowercase, and limited to letters, digits, full stops and underscores. Your display name is separate, allows capitals, spaces and almost anything else, and can be changed whenever you like.
Score the username here. It is the one that has to be unique, the one people type to find you, and the one worth thinking about. The display name is a decision you can unmake this afternoon.
The rules that reject a name at signup
Two to thirty-two characters. No spaces. No two full stops in a row, and none at the start or the end. Capitals are accepted but silently lowercased, so a name whose whole idea is its capitalisation does not survive.
Every candidate is checked against all of that before it is ranked, and a name that fails cannot take the top slot however well it scores. A ninety-four that Discord rejects is a zero.
