TikTok also limits how often a username can change. That makes this closer to the Reddit end of the scale than the Instagram end: not permanent, but not a field to experiment in either.
The handle is also your share URL, so it gets typed by people who heard it spoken in a video rather than read it. Anything that needs spelling out loud costs you those. Letters that sound alike, doubled consonants and a full stop in an awkward place all show up as traffic you never see.

Handle changes are not free
TikTok limits how often a username can be changed, and every change breaks every link anyone has ever shared to your profile. That is the real argument for picking carefully the first time, and it is a stronger argument than the numerology.
The number is the tiebreaker, not the brief
If two handles are equally available, equally spellable and equally yours, the tradition gives you a reason to pick one. If one of them is much better as a name, take that one. A page that told you otherwise would be selling you something.
