In 2006 a Hangzhou plate reading A88888 was reported sold at auction for a sum in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, and Hong Kong has auctioned single-digit plates for millions. This is not a fringe belief — it is a functioning market. 八 sounds like 發, to prosper; 四 sounds like 死, death, and plates containing it discount.
