The birthday problem
This is not a system and it will not shorten your odds by any amount. It is about crowding. Some numbers are held by far more tickets than others, and that decides what a jackpot is divided by rather than who wins it.
Baloto draws from 43 numbers. The calendar reaches 31 of them, about 72 per cent of the board, and leaves 12 that no birthday can produce. Dates cannot reach past 31, so every line built from one crowds into the same stretch of the board. Lines built entirely from calendar numbers make up 17.7 per cent of the possible lines, and a far larger share of the tickets people fill in by hand. A line reaching above 31 wins no more often. It is held by fewer people when it does. The Súper Balota pool stops at 16, so that one sits inside calendar range whatever you do with the main numbers.

Colombia's health levy
Baloto is five from 43 with a Súper Balota from 16, and the money behind it is earmarked: Colombian lottery revenue is directed into the health system by law. Buying a ticket here is closer to a hypothecated tax with a prize attached than it is in most markets.
The second pool is small, 16 numbers, which does less damage to the odds than the American Powerball pools do. The calculator draws it separately from the main five, because that is how the draw works.
