The birthday problem
Read this as a note on other players, not on the draw. Your chance of matching is fixed by the format. Your chance of matching alone is not, and that is the difference between a whole prize and a quarter of one.
18 of the 49 numbers on a Taiwan Lotto 6/49 form are above 31, which puts them outside every birthday, anniversary and door number in play. A slip filled from memory almost always stays under 32, because that is where the calendar stops. Lines built entirely from calendar numbers make up 5.3 per cent of the possible lines, and a far larger share of the tickets people fill in by hand. The high numbers are not luckier. They are lonelier, and that is the whole of the effect.

The other Taiwanese lottery
Taiwan Lotto is a 6/49 run for public welfare funding, and it is not the number game that shapes Taiwanese habits most. That would be the uniform-invoice lottery: every official receipt carries a number, the finance ministry draws winners every two months, and an entire country keeps its shopping receipts. It was introduced to stop shops under-reporting sales, and it works by making customers want the paperwork.
One effect is that people here are used to a number arriving already attached to them rather than chosen. Picking six from 49 is the unfamiliar direction, which is where a rule, any rule, starts to feel better than a blank form.
