Run by the Jockey Club
Mark Six is operated by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, the same body that runs the racing and the football betting, and the surplus goes to its charities trust. The Club is one of the largest charitable donors in Hong Kong, funded substantially by people losing bets, which is a fact the marketing tends to lead with and the odds table tends not to.
Eight is the number people add to a hand-picked line and four is the one they take out, from 發 and 死 respectively. Snowball draws timed to Lunar New Year and Mid-Autumn pull in players who do not buy a ticket the rest of the year. The balls have no view on any of this.

The only edge on this page
Read this as a note on other players, not on the draw. Your chance of matching is fixed by the format. Your chance of matching alone is not, and that is the difference between a whole prize and a quarter of one.
Only 63 per cent of the Mark Six pool falls inside calendar range: 31 numbers a date could give you, 18 it cannot. Dates cannot reach past 31, so every line built from one crowds into the same stretch of the board. Lines built entirely from calendar numbers make up 5.3 per cent of the possible lines, and a far larger share of the tickets people fill in by hand. A line reaching above 31 wins no more often. It is held by fewer people when it does.
